Biking in Bangor

Cycling in Bangor

Last Thursday cyclists descended on Bangor for the Final of the Seat Super 7 Criterium Series. This event ran from 3rd June, starting in Newry and ending on 13th August in Bangor. The other venues were Derry/Londonderry, Antrim, Newtownards, Banbridge and Titanic Quarter, Belfast. Roads in the town centre were closed and less proficient cyclists got a chance to ride on the traffic free roads prior to the race. Continue reading “Biking in Bangor”

Breakfast

Bangor Marina

Once or twice a month I meet an old friend in Bangor for breakfast. We used to meet in the evenings and drink too much Guinness but as we’ve got older and a little more sensible (I was going to say wiser but thought better of it) we meet for breakfast. Afterwards we go a walk along the front towards Pickie. For those who don’t know Bangor, Pickie is a play area for children with a pool and swan pedal boats, an ice cream shop, play area, mini train rides and more and it overlooks the marina.

On our latest meet to eat it was a glorious sunny day and as always I had my little Sony RX100 camera.

Bangor Seaside Festival 2

Spitfire Lorry

I had expected to add this post within a few days of the previous post but events overtook me, but here it is.

As I said previously the weather relented on the second day and we actually had sunshine. In Ireland we’re probably ahead if it doesn’t rain. Sunshine is a bonus.

On the Sunday I was drawn to the car display. True this is not connected to the seaside and there was a replica Spitfire and trucks there as well but its always interesting.  The guys who have these vehicles know everything there is to know about them. Many have had them in bits and rebuilt them. You hear fascinating conversations on carburettors, points, setting tappets, things long forgotten in the world of fuel injection electronics and power steering.

The photographs however are of an expensive car, two lorries and a fighter plane! I’ll be uploading some car photographs to my Photoshelter site over the next few days.

Bangor Seaside Festival 1

I live in Bangor and every year there is a seaside festival in the town lasting over a weekend in June. I remember previous years as sunny and warm which may or may not be correct as I find that I tend to remember good days while the not so good fade from memory faster. I think this is the case with most people. Who remembers the bad days during the school summer holidays? This year was marked by a terrible Saturday and an okay Sunday so I’m not sure how I’ll remember it. The weather forecast had been bad for Saturday and it was spot on. It rained and rained. It alternated between drizzle and chucking it down. It just wouldn’t stop.

I’ve said before that I sympathise with the people that organise events in this country. They spend time, and money arranging things only to be absolutely shafted by the Irish weather and they do it all again the following year.

I’ve included some images below from the Saturday in black and white. Saturday was a black and white day. Images from Sunday will be posted over the next few days and I’ll do them in colour.

These stalls are mainly selling food both local and foreign. Last year it was solid people, you struggled to walk along here!

There were various military vehicles on display. This shovel was strapped to the bonnet of a Land Rover.

There were two Tall Ships and they were popular regardless of the weather.
