International Women’s Day, Belfast, 2017
International Women’s Day is on 8th March but the celebrations and events are running all through the month.
On Saturday, 4th March an estimated 2000 people, mostly women, rallied in Writers’ Square and marched to the City Hall. The atmosphere was light hearted and spirits were high. Rain had been forecast, which is usual, but it stayed away for the most part, which is unusual.
There had been face painting in Writers’ Square so some had their faces painted. Many held placards and some, representing organisations, were holding banners.
At the City Hall Baroness May Blood, Joan Collins, TD, Dublin South and Laya Barr from Youth Action among others addressed the crowd.
I couldn’t listen as well as I would’ve liked because I was trying to get the speakers names, but I can say that Donald Trump got a rub. I’m sure he would’ve expected no less.
